What Is Double Cleansing,
and Who Is It For?

Double cleansing became popular through Korean skincare and is often presented as something everyone should do. The reasoning behind it is specific, but not everyone needs it every day. Let us discuss when it is useful, rather than treating it as a rule.

Double cleansing has become one of the most discussed skincare steps in recent years. Yet the biggest misconception around it is that it is a compulsory rule for everyone. In reality, double cleansing is a context-dependent approach that is useful in particular situations. Below, we explain the reasoning and who it may make sense for.

The Reasoning: Why Two Steps?

Some of the material on our skin is water-based (sweat and dust), while some is oil-based (sebum, makeup and sunscreen films). A single water-based cleanser cannot always fully dissolve oil-based residue. This is the reasoning behind double cleansing: first, an oil-based cleanser (a balm or oil) dissolves oil-based residue, following the principle that oil dissolves oil; then, a water-based cleanser (a gel or foam) removes what remains, along with water-based residue. Two steps target two different types of residue.

For Whom, and When?

Double cleansing makes the most sense in the evening and in the following situations:

  • When wearing heavy or long-wearing makeup.
  • When using water-resistant or highly durable sunscreen.
  • For those who feel that substantial sebum or grime has accumulated during the day.

By contrast, in the morning a single gentle cleanse is usually enough; skin that was already cleansed at night does not need an intensive two-step cleanse in the morning. A single cleanse also works well on quieter, makeup-free days. Double cleansing is therefore not a daily obligation, but a step to use when needed.

Avoiding Over-Cleansing

The most common mistake is assuming that more cleansing means cleaner skin. Cleansing repeatedly during the day, using harsh cleansers or double cleansing unnecessarily may strain the barrier and leave skin more unbalanced. For skin prone to sensitivity or dryness, gentle, easy-to-rinse formulas and a single cleanse when appropriate are a more balanced choice. The aim is the most suitable cleansing, not the most cleansing.
