Our Scientific Approach

Last Updated · 8 October 2026

Not Just a Score,
Scientifically Supported Decision Support.

Klaris does not place a cosmetic product into a single “good/bad” category. It reads the ingredient list, matches it with source families, considers the formulation context, and summarises the result in Turkish according to your skin or hair profile. This page is an open summary of that process.

i.

Our Approach

Supported, Measured, and Personal.

The Klaris approach rests on three principles:

  • Scientifically supported: When we comment on an ingredient, that comment is backed by a signal from an international scientific or regulatory source family.
  • Measured: We do not make absolute judgements; we avoid alarmist language and direct instructions on product use.
  • Personal: The same ingredient may be interpreted differently for sensitive skin than for resilient skin. Context is part of the decision.

Nothing on this page constitutes a medical diagnosis, treatment, or an absolute guarantee of safety.

Source Families

Ten Source and Reference Families.

Klaris draws on the following ten source families when assessing ingredients. They do not carry equal weight; the type of ingredient and the question being asked affect which family has greater influence.

  1. 01SCCSScientific Committee on Consumer Safety. EU scientific committee opinions.
  2. 02CIRCosmetic Ingredient Review. Independent US ingredient review.
  3. 03CosIngEU Cosmetic Ingredient Database. European ingredient database.
  4. 04IFRAInternational Fragrance Association. Fragrance ingredient standards.
  5. 05ECHAEuropean Chemicals Agency. Chemical safety dossiers.
  6. 06IARCInternational Agency for Research on Cancer. Long-term safety classifications.
  7. 07EU AnnexEC Cosmetic Regulation Annex II–VI. Annexes covering prohibited and restricted ingredients.
  8. 08TİTCKTurkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency. Local cosmetics regulatory framework.
  9. 09PubMedNIH National Library of Medicine. Index of peer-reviewed academic publications.
  10. 10DOIDigital Object Identifier. Citation traceability.

Information from these sources does not, on its own, determine suitability. Klaris brings the signals together; the decision always remains yours.

Scoring Logic

How Is the General Assessment Formed?

The general assessment shown for a product, on a scale of 0-100, is based not on one ingredient but on the ingredient list as a whole, its order, and the signals from source families considered together. Three core principles apply:

  • Order matters. Ingredients higher up an INCI list are generally present at higher concentrations; this directly affects their contribution to the assessment.
  • An ingredient is interpreted in context. The same ingredient may be a stabiliser in one formula and an active ingredient in another. Klaris tries to take this into account.
  • One score is not enough. The general assessment is always presented alongside profile-specific match, sensitivity warnings, and scientific source information.

A score of “78” does not mean the product is a “high match” for everyone; the same product may look different in another profile.

The Klaris Score is free; Cilt Uyumum (My Skin Match) and Saç Uyumum (My Hair Match) in the app are part of Klaris Premium. Explore what the scores and match bands mean.

iv.

Identity Context

16 Skin + 16 Hair Combinations = 32 Different Interpretations.

Klaris considers skin profiles along four axes: Oily/Dry, Sensitivity-Prone/Resilient, Dark-Spot-Prone/Even-Toned, and Wrinkle-Prone/Firm. Hair profiles use four parallel axes: Oily Quickly/Dry, Fine/Thick, Straight/Curly, and Natural/Processed.

Each combination of these axes creates a distinct Identity, and the interpretation of the same product is adjusted for that Identity. The Identity passport uses only clear axis labels, for example: Oily + Sensitivity-Prone + Dark-Spot-Prone + Firm.

This Identity classification does not replace a dermatological medical diagnosis. It is simply a product feature intended to make ingredient assessments more sensitive to context.

v.

Regulatory Signals

The Regulatory Context in the EU and Türkiye.

When assessing cosmetic ingredients, Klaris considers publicly available regulatory context, including the EC Cosmetic Regulation Annex II-VI lists and the cosmetics regulatory framework of the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TİTCK).

Important: Klaris has no direct partnership or endorsement relationship with any official institution, including TİTCK. Regulatory information is included in the assessment process solely as publicly available reference context; it does not mean a product has been officially approved or rejected.

What Klaris Is Not

Our Limits, Clearly Stated.

  • It is not medical advice. Klaris is not a doctor, dermatologist, or healthcare provider; it does not provide diagnoses, treatment, or information that constitutes a medical recommendation.
  • It is not an absolute guarantee of safety. Scores and match assessments are decision-support signals that should be considered alongside your personal health and allergy history.
  • It is not a judgement of brands. We examine ingredients; we do not label brands “good” or “bad”. When a signal is disputed, we try to make room for the brand's explanation.
  • It does not verify marketing claims. Klaris does not certify the accuracy of claims such as “natural”, “clean”, or “vegan”; ingredient information helps users read such claims more knowledgeably.
  • It is not sufficient on its own during pregnancy or for specific health conditions. Assessments in these circumstances require a personal health history; a Klaris card is for information and does not replace a doctor's opinion.

Transparency and Updates

This Methodology Is a Living Document.

Klaris is a young product. Some elements of the methodology, such as Identity classification, source weighting, and explanatory language, may be reviewed over time. Significant changes are reflected on this page, with the last-updated date shown at the top.

Send questions about the methodology or assessments to info@klaris.com.tr. For medical advice, we recommend consulting your own doctor.
