Sodium Lactate

INCI · Sodium Lactate

Related names and forms: Lactic Acid Sodium Salt. This list does not indicate synonyms or exact ingredient matches.

Sodium lactate is the salt form of lactic acid and contributes moisture retention in cosmetics. It is chemically related to Lactic Acid, but the label names and formula roles are not identical. NMF means natural moisturising factor; one ingredient does not represent that entire system. The lactic acid and sodium PCA pages below help distinguish acids, salts and humectants.

i. Cosmetic Functions

Frequently Discussed Effects

The following headings summarise areas of effect frequently discussed in the literature; visible results in each area require regular use and a suitable formula.

  • Moisture Retention

Its water-holding properties contribute to a moisturising formula.

  • NMF Context

Lactate is among the components associated with natural moisturising factor.

  • Buffering Role

It can help adjust formula pH; it does not automatically fix skin pH.

Mechanism

What Happens Within the Skin?

The following points summarise mechanisms from dermocosmetic literature in plain English. Klaris presents them as background information to help readers understand the context, not as medical claims.

  1. Step 1

    Salt Form

It is a sodium salt obtained by neutralising lactic acid.

  2. Step 2

    Water Retention

Humectancy is a principal function described in raw-material documentation.

  3. Step 3

    pH Context

The formula's acid-salt balance is assessed alongside its final pH.

ii. Role in the Formula

How Is It Read on a Label?

Sodium lactate can be used in water-based moisturisers. It may share a formula with lactic acid; exfoliating strength cannot be calculated without the final pH and overall acid composition.

A Closer Look · pH, Stability, Synergy

Jungbunzlauer technical documentation reports improved hydration measurements for a cream containing 3% sodium lactate. This is supplier evidence, not proof of equal results or superiority for all products. A commercial raw material may also be an aqueous solution: the amount of solution added is not the same as the amount of sodium lactate itself. An INCI list alone cannot establish either amount or the final pH. Hydration and exfoliation claims therefore need separate product evidence.

iii. Sensitivity Advisory

A Note on Extra Care in Context

Humectant use does not make every product suitable for sensitive skin. For an acidic product, consider both its directions and your skin's response.

A sensitivity advisory is not an instruction for use; where individual health circumstances, pregnancy or known sensitivities are involved, discussing the decision with your doctor may be a more contextual approach.

Common Misconceptions

Frequently Confused Points

  1. Common Belief

Sodium Lactate exfoliates just like Lactic Acid.

    A More Contextual Reading

The salt name alone does not establish exfoliating strength; final pH and formulation matter.

  2. Common Belief

Being part of natural moisturising factor makes every product non-irritating.

    A More Contextual Reading

A relationship with a natural system is not a tolerance guarantee for a finished product.

  3. Common Belief

    Raw-material percentage is pure-ingredient percentage.

    A More Contextual Reading

These proportions must be distinguished when an aqueous solution is used.
